RICHMOND, VA (Sept. 14, 2016) – The Richmond Kickers (12-7-9) held an in-form Charlotte Independence (14-7-7) squad to a tepid scoreless draw at City Stadium on Wednesday night. Charlotte entered the night red-hot, having scored 12 goals over a three-game stretch, but was left frustrated on Wednesday with just one shot on target.

The Kickers appeared to take the lead through Conor Shanosky after just 54 seconds of play, as his header hit the back of the net, but the referee had adjudicated a foul against the Kickers before the goal.

After weathering early pressure, the Independence steadily built from the back and former Kicker Paul Clowes had a chance in the 13th minute to test the keeper, but he sent his effort over the bar.

Owusu Sekyere then tried to push the hosts ahead three minutes later, only to narrowly miss the target from distance following a broken corner kick. Charlotte’s Brian Brown also came close to grabbing an opener, but fired a left-footed shot into the side netting in the 26th minute.

The second half mirrored the way the first ended, with play restricted to the midfield. But following a double substitution, Richmond’s Anthony Grant was left open at the back post from a long throw in only to be flagged offside after the flick on by Brian Ownby in the 59th minute.

Jorge Herrera, who replaced David Estrada in the 71st minute, nearly saw his corner kick delivery turned in by Patrick Slogic, but the defender’s header went wide.

Ownby had the first shot of the match on target 12 minutes from full-time, but the chance was well-covered by Independence keeper John Berner.

The Kickers then for a second time thought they’d nudged in front with the ball crossing the line following a scramble in the box on 84 minutes, but Charlotte escaped again as Grant was flagged offside at the back post.

The Independence faces another short layoff before hosting the Rochester Rhinos (11-5-12) at Ramblewood Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the penultimate game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm ET.
