Rochester (N.Y.) — The Rochester Rhinos grabbed all three points in a 4-0 home victory over the Charlotte Independence on Saturday night.
The Rhinos opened up the scoring in the 27th minute with a free kick just outside the 18-yard box by Wal Fall. Just before the halftime whistle in added time, the Rhinos’ Mike Garzi scored assisted by Cristiano François on a cross from the right side. In the second half, the Rhinos added a goal by Darius Madison and a converted penalty kick from Kenardo Forbes.
The best opportunity for the Independence came when Enzo Martinez, the reigning USL Player of the Week, curled in a right footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box in the 64th minute. The Independence finished with just one shot on target in the game.
The Rhinos out-shot the Independence 14-5 with eight shots being on target for Rochester. The loss brings the Independence to an overall record of 1-2-2 with five points on the season, while Rochester picks up its 8th point and improves to 2-2-1.
This is the Independence’s second loss of the season by two goals or more. In all of 2016, the Independence did not lose any game more than one goal. The Independence have been shut out in both of their losses this season.
The Independence will next play the defending USL Champions, New York Red Bull II at Eagle Field on the campus of Winthrop University. Kickoff is scheduled for Thursday, May 11th at 7:00 PM ET. Tickets are available for purchase on charlotteindependence.com.
