Independence Battered By Charleston In Midweek Matchup

The Charlotte Independence struggle on the road versus a third place Charleston side on Wednesday night.

Charleston (SC) The USL’s second place team, Charlotte Independence were blanked 3-0 by the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at MUSC Health Stadium. In a game that was postponed due to Hurricane Irma, Battery forward Heviel Cordovés scored twice for the home side, giving Charleston their 13th win of the season.

On a nine-game streak without a shutout, the Independence offense was only able to muster one shot on goal in the 90th minute. The Independence defense struggled, as well, allowing three goals for the second time in the past four games. In 15 games at MUCS Health Stadium this season, the away side has walked away with a win only once.

The Independence will next take on a fifth place Tampa Bay Rowdies side that will be on 16 days of rest. In the first matchup at Winthrop University, the two clubs battled to a 2-2 draw in the last home game before the Independence moved to the Sportsplex at Matthews. In contrast, Charlotte will be playing their third game in eight days due to the postponement of the Charleston match. The Independence will again have an opportunity to
