TAMPA, Fla. — Goalkeeper Cody Mizell earned the USL Fan’s Choice Save of the Month for May of the 2017 season for his spectacular save against Orlando City B on May 27. The 24-year-old’s save came at a crucial point in the game, as the Independence trailed the hosts 1-0. Danny Deaken’s shot forced an acrobatic save from Mizell, who kept Orlando from doubling their lead.
“It was a key moment in the game to make a save, so obviously it helped the team get three points away in Orlando,” Mizell said. “I was lucky enough to get there.” Charlotte came from behind to win the game 3-1.
Mizell’s save received 37 percent of the votes conducted online at USLSoccer.com. Louisville City FC’s Tim Dobrowolski took second with 29 percent for his double save against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, while Bethlehem Steel FC’s Jake McGuire finished third for his reflex stop to deny FC Cincinnati, which took 26 percent.
