Charlotte (N.C.) — The grand opening of the Charlotte Independence's brand new home was well worth wait as the Jacks christened the Sportsplex at Matthews with a 2-0 win against the Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday night.
Man of the Match Jorge Herrera scored the first goal for the Independence 13 minutes in off of a free kick. Herrera later assisted the second and final goal coming from Alex Martinez who netted the goal in minute 62 of the second half. Harrisburg had some goal scoring possibilities, but Independence goalkeeper Cody Mizell did not disappoint. Mizell had an incredible diving save late in the second half to solidify the shutout for the Independence. Mizell and the defense, including Bilal Duckett who made his return after having an ankle injury, posted their first clean sheet of the season.
Herrera is now even with Enzo Martinez for the team goal-scoring lead with four goals apiece this season. Martinez served a one-game suspension for his two yellow cards against FC Cincinnati and was not able to play in the match against Harrisburg.
Charlotte improves their record to 4-3-4 as Harrisburg drops to 2-6-4. The Charlotte Independence will play next on June 24 at City Stadium against the Richmond Kickers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
