The Charlotte Independence look to get revenge on the Rochester Rhinos this Saturday, July 1

Charlotte (N.C.) – The Charlotte Independence (5-3-4) return to their new home stadium at the Sportsplex at Matthews to face the Rochester Rhinos (5-2-5). Kick-off is set for 7:00 PM ET. The Jacks are returning from a victorious outing to Richmond, where they defeated the Richmond Kickers 2-0.

Charlotte faced Richmond with momentum from the opening of the Sportsplex at Matthews. Enzo Martinez, returning from red card suspension, netted two goals for the Jacks and goalkeeper Cody Mizell recorded his second-consecutive clean sheet. Martinez scored from the penalty spot in the 44th minute following a foul on David Estrada and then proceeded to double the lead before the 60th minute off of a Joel Johnson assist. The Jacks held off the Kickers’ attacks, ending the game 2-0.

“Having guys get honors is a reflection that the team is doing well," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "I think that is equally important.”

The Independence now turn to face the Rochester Rhinos at home on Saturday, July 1st. On 20 points in Eastern Conference Standings, the Rhinos sit just one point above the eighth-place Independence. The visitors are coming off of a loss to Orlando City B on Friday, June 23, but have been a strong side against the Independence in the past. With an all time record of 1-3-2 against the Rhinos, the Jacks are looking for revenge after losing to the visitors 4-0 on Saturday, April 29th.

“Since then, we’ve been a little bit sharper and a little bit better,” said Jeffries. “I will tell you that the guys are really motivated to show that they are ready to play and to do well.”

Rochester’s offense is led by Wal Fall who has scored three goals in 11 appearances, and their defensive end is anchored by Tomas Gomez who has only allowed eight goals in 11 matches.

“Rochester has always been a really tough game for everyone in the league," said Jeffries. "They are very well organized, and they come with a good defensive mindset."

The Saturday, July 1st game against the Rochester Rhinos will be broadcast on the WCCB’s Antenna TV Network (OTA 18.2, Spectrum 1261) and on the USL’s Match Center via YouTube with a 7:00 PM ET kickoff. Tickets are now on sale at
