Charlotte (N.C.) – The Charlotte Independence (6-3-4) moved into third place in the United Soccer League’s (USL) Eastern Conference on Tuesday night when they defeated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (5-7-4) by at 3-1 talley. Jorge Herrera’s two goal performance helped carry the Independence past the Riverhounds and continued a four-game winning streak, which ties a franchise record.
On less than two days of rest and coming off a weather-lengthened bout with the Rochester Rhinos last Saturday, the Independence traveled to Highmark Stadium for an Independence Day scrap with the Riverhounds. 2016 USL MVP Finalist Enzo Martinez struck first for the Independence in the 40th minute on an attack setup by Alex Martinez. The Independence continued their momentum after the halftime break when Jorge Herrera earned and converted a penalty in the 62nd minute. Herrera, the USL’s 2nd All-Time leading goal scorer, bagged a brace in the 78th minute when he scored directly from the corner kick. The two-goal performance was the sixth such for an Independence player this season, which leads the USL.
The Independence will next be in action this Saturday, July 8th as Saint Louis FC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews. Tickets are now on sale for the game schedule to kickoff at 7:00 PM.
