Charlotte (N.C.) – The Charlotte Independence (10-3-6) continue to fight for the first place position of the USL’s Eastern Conference with a home victory over Louisville City FC (10-3-5). The Independence extended their unbeaten streak to ten games, including seven wins, with a dominating victory over Bethlehem Steel FC. Only one point behind the first place Charleston Battery with two games in-hand, the Independence will go for their fourth win in five games at their brand new home stadium in the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday night, where they are still undefeated.
The Independence are still riding an unbeaten streak that began on June 10th, most recently including a 4-0 victory over Bethlehem Steel FC. Goals from Jorge Herrera, Alex Martinez, and a brace from Lewis Hilton led the Jacks to a comfortable win on the road. The victory also helped close the gap between the Independence and first place Charleston Battery, who now sit just one point above the Jacks.
“It's nice of him to get the chance early and finish, and that brought him a lot of confidence,” Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries said of Hilton. “For the rest of the day, I thought he was really sharp.”
The Jacks now look to Louisville City FC, who happen to be the last team to defeat them and the team sitting one point below in the Eastern Conference. The Saturday, June 7th defeat Louisville saw a single goal from Richard Ballard and a red card for Independence defender Ashani Fairclough.
“There's a little bit of an extra edge to this game because we're both in good spots in the standings,” said Jeffries. “We both want to do well.”
The Independence and Louisville City FC will kickoff at 7:00 PM at the Sportsplex at Matthew with the game being live broadcast on charlotteindependence.com and the USL’s Match Center via YouTube. Tickets for the game are now on sale.
