Charlotte (N.C.) – The USL’s Eastern Conference second place team, Charlotte Independence (13-7-9) look to stop a two-game skid against playoff contending FC Cincinnati (10-9-10) this Friday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews. The Queen City Cup will also be on the line as the Charlotte Independence took away a road point in the first matchup against the “other Queen City” on Saturday, June 10th at Nippert Stadium.
The last time the Independence played, the team was unable to collect any points at Al Lang stadium versus a fifth place Tampa Bay Rowdies side. The Independence controlled the bulk of opportunities and possession, but Hunter Gorskie broke through in the 33rd minute for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Charlotte would end up with more shots on goal, but for the first time in 42 games, dropped back-to-back games.
Having locked up a 2017 USL playoff spot locked up on tie-breakers, the Independence now turn their attention to gathering as many point possible in the final three games of the season. The first opportunity will come Friday night when the visiting FC Cincinnati side takes their five-game unbeaten streak into the Sportsplex at Matthews. The matchup between Charlotte and Cincinnati will complete the two-game Queen City Cup, as both teams sit on one point in the contest. On Saturday, June 10th, Charlotte travel to Nippert Stadium and Alex Martinez got the Independence off to a fast start with an 18th minute goal assisted by Jorge Herrera. Just before the half, Cincinnati defender Justin Hoyte got the equalizer for the home side.
FC Cincinnati last played on Saturday night at Saint Louis FC. Danni Konig converted a penalty at the death to ensure a 2-2 draw against Saint Louis FC. Cincinnati now sits in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, and two points above the final playoff position.
With playoff implications on the line, the Independence face FC Cincinnati this Friday, September 29th with a 7:00 PM kickoff. The Independence will return home on Saturday, October 14th for the 2017 regular season finale versus Charleston Battery for the final game of the Southern Derby.
