
Charlotte (NC) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team has signed midfielder Ricardo Bocanegra to the 2019 roster. The 30-year-old formerly represented the U-23 Mexician National Team and helped the nation win the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara. Most recently, Bocanegra helped lead the New York Cosmos to the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) 2019 National Championship match.
Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, Bocanegra grew up in Mexico and began his youth career with Liga MX side Atlas FC in 2007. He continued his career with his boyhood club through 2015, making 69 senior team appearances and netting two goals across all competitions. Formerly, Bocanegra signed with Mexican second division sides Correcaminos and UAT Murciêlagos, as well as, a loan stint with Irapuato FC in 2014. After departing Atlas, Bocanegra played in the Nigarauian first division with Real Esteli FC recording 17 appearances and one goal.
Bocanegra will be available for selection as the Independence continue in USL Championship action on Friday, August 9th at Loudoun United FC. The official watch part will take place at Jack's House Soccer Bar and Event Space (1523 Elizabeth Ave. Suite 120, Charlotte NC, 28204). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET.
