Charlotte (NC) – On Tuesday night the Charlotte soccer community raised $10,000 for U.S. Women's National Team SheBelieves Hero award winner, McKenna Woodhead. The outpouring of support was the 2nd Annual event in honor of the 15-year-old who has provided inspiration for the entire soccer community.
A footnote to the impact of McKenna's resiliency, the Independence battled Bethlehem Steel FC to a 2-1 victory. The Independence kept their opponents off the scoreboard in the first half and even took a lead when Mark Hill's free-kick glanced off the crossbar and finished by Andrew Gutman for his 2nd goal of the season.
In the second half, Independence midfielder Alex Martinez swung in an inch-perfect pass which was headed in for a goal by Jorge Herrera. In the final stages of the game, Bethlehem would spoil a clean sheet for goalkeeper Curtis Anderson, who made his first-team debut.
The win marks the first for new Head Coach Jim McGuinness' and of the 2019 for the Independence. The team will cap off a three-game, seven day, homestand on Saturday, April 20th as in-state rivals North Carolina FC visit the Sportsplex at Matthews for a NC Derby and Southern Derby showdown.
