CHARLOTTE, NC (August 1, 2026) – The Charlotte Independence earned a critical win over third place One Knoxville SC 3-1 Saturday night at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
The Independence were ready to go straight from the kickoff as Charlotte fired 17 shots against the defending league champions. Souaibou Marou bagged a brace to bring his season total to nine, tying him for the league lead.
The league’s best first half team applied the early pressure, pinning One Knoxville back through the opening 10 minutes. After recycling possession from a corner kick, Luis Alvarez — making his first start since June 24 — unleashed a low drive that forced goalkeeper Johan Garibay into the match’s first save. Alvarez continued to create 10 minutes later, clipping a crafty ball to Jon Bakero, who flicked on with his head just over the crossbar.
Once again the Honduran remained dangerous. After picking the ball 20 yards from goal, the midfielder touched inside and fired a curler, beating Garibay only to be denied by the woodwork. Back the other way came Knoxville, but Matt Levy came to the rescue. Babacar Diene beat Reudd Manin to have a partial breakaway on the Charlotte keeper, but Levy made a spectacular one-handed diving stop to keep it scoreless.
Manin came up with a crucial defensive play just minutes later. One Knoxville slipped John Murphy Jr. through on goal, giving the midfielder what looked to be a clear scoring chance. As Murphy prepared to strike his volley, Manin timed his challenge perfectly, flying in to make a strong tackle and deny a certain goal-scoring opportunity.
Stunningly, the visitors didn’t take the lead in the 36th minute. Kyle Linhares was slipped through and suddenly, Knoxville had a clear 2-on-0 on Levy. Linhares attempted to slide it over Murphy Jr, but his pass was too close to Levy, who quickly dove on top of it to stop a surefire goal.
The Independence found the breakthrough with just two minutes left in the first half. Alvarez won the ball back in his own half and played a gorgeous cross-field pass to Bakero. Bakero drove 40 yards and picked up Marou, who made an excellent run across his defender before sliding it under Garibay for his eighth goal of the season.
Besides a few scares from Knoxville, it was an impressive first 45 minutes from the Jacks, dominating the shot count 10-2 and likely deserving of the advantage at the break.
Marou had a glorious chance to double the score just a minute into the second half. Alvarez crossed to the backpost, where the striker had a free header but he couldn’t direct it into the gaping net. But he didn’t miss seconds later.
For the second time, Bakero picked out Marou – this time, a cross to the back post and the striker made no mistake, volleying past Garibay for his fifth goal in his last five matches in all competitions.
Bakero had it going all night and nearly got a goal for his efforts. The Spaniard curled a try from the corner of the penalty box past a fully stretched Garibay and missed the far post by inches in the 54th minute.
Only the crossbar could deny Marou his hat trick in the 57th minute. Alvarez fed Christopher Jaime in loads of space along the left flank. Jaime cut inside and neatly found Marou all alone standing on the six-yard box. His one-time effort blasted off the underside of the crossbar, straight down on the goal line, and out to everyone’s disbelief.
Knoxville tried to get back into the game in the 74th minute and were robbed a goal by Jefferson Amaya. Zarokostas worked one right across the goal mouth and landed right on Denis Krioutchenkov’s foot, but Amaya dove in front of it, denying the striker from depositing into the empty net.
Five minutes later, Charlotte made it three in the 76th minute. Jaime looked to find Marou for his hat trick, sliding it across the frame. Doing his best to stop Marou from tapping it in, Jordan Skelon deflected it past his own goalkeeper.
Not to go into the night quietly, Knoxville got one back in the 79th minute. Diene fed Krioutchenkov and one-on-one with Levy, buried into the side netting to give the visitors life.
The Jacks saw the game out, continuing their charge towards first place and earning their second-ever win over One Knox.

“Getting the goal at the end of the first half was massive. It gave us confidence, and I thought we started the second half really brightly. We probably should have gotten more than just the one before scoring later. I thought we were really, really strong in the second half. The only disappointment was conceding late and having to work hard to close the game out. Overall, though, it was a very good performance and a very good win against a team that’s been excellent on the road all year and, obviously, last year’s champions.”

“He’s getting into the right spots and creating good chances. You’ll probably look back and see that he scored the two difficult ones and missed the two easy ones. His movement has been really good, and his work rate is incredible. You saw him at the end of the game still chasing and closing defenders as if it were the first minute.”
