CHARLOTTE, NC (August 8, 2026) – Souaibou Marou scored his league-leading 10th goal of the season as the Charlotte Independence knocked off Greenville Triumph SC 1-0 on Saturday night.
On a night full of stop-and-start action, Marou buried home his fifth goal in his last five USL League One matches in the 62nd minute to keep Charlotte hot on Union Omaha’s heels for first place. The victory brings Charlotte to three consecutive wins and in sole possession of second place in the league table.
Greenville looked to go in front first in the 10th minute, but Matt Levy made the match’s first save. In-form striker Azaad Liadi let the ball run and got in between the two Charlotte central defenders. Looking up and catching Levy off his line, Liadi looked to place around the goalkeeper, but Levy urgently scrambled into position to make the stop.
Three minutes later, Mathis Guffroy almost scored the goal of the year. Picking the ball up at the top of the box, Guffroy popped it up to himself and tried an audacious overhead kick, not missing Amal Knight’s post by much.
Knight came up with a fantastic save in the 15th minute to keep it level. Jon Bakero brilliantly picked out Marou standing right on the last defender. The forward turned for a point-blank effort, but Knight superbly stuck out his left leg to deny Marou from hitting the double-digit goal mark.
Both teams showcased their pace in attack throughout the opening 25 minutes. Charlotte continued to look for Marou, whose runs stretched the back line and opened space for Luis Alvarez and Guffroy to operate underneath. On the other end, Greenville leaned on the speed of Liadi, recent signing Muba Nuor and William Akio to run at the Charlotte defense and create problems in transition.
Chris Jaime went looking for his first goal of the season in the 35th minute. The midfielder navigated through the Greenville defense all the way into the box before lifting his left-footed strike over the crossbar.
After a 45-minute weather delay, the two teams closed out the final minutes of the first half and headed to the locker rooms scoreless.
Charlotte looked for the breakthrough straight away into the second half and struck woodwork. After a short corner exchange between Bakero and Alvarez, Alvarez whipped a ball across the six-yard box that went all the way through and hit the far post.
A few minutes later and Greenville was inches from a goal of their own. A long throw followed by a touch in the box from Zane Bubb landed perfectly on the foot of center back Anthony Patti, but his turning effort from the doorstep somehow missed the frame.
The Jacks were the ones to finally find the back of the net in the 62nd minute through Marou. The play started from Jaime, who picked the ball up at midfield and accelerated forward. He slipped through Alvarez, who put two men down before finding Marou wide open in the box. Knight robbed the forward on the first try, but Greenville couldn’t keep out the second as the ball thundered into the net off the underside of the crossbar.
Looking for more, Marou was sprung in on goal all alone in the 72nd minute. Alvarez broke the lines and Marou timed his run to perfection, left with just the keeper to beat. Marou touched it around Knight, but the Jamaican goalkeeper recovered well to thwart Marou from a sharp angle.
Greenville went down to 10 men in the 77th minute. Liadi took down Javen Romero dangerously, leading to his second yellow card and a disqualification, making the task more difficult for Greenville to walk out with a point.
Hoping for the killshot, Marou again was denied by Knight from point blank range in the 82nd minute. Jaime found the Cameroonian at the penalty spot and his quick turn and fire was stopped only by Knight’s outstretched hand.
The Jacks killed off the game to grab all three points and continue their perfect homestand. The Independence now will prepare for their Prinx Tires USL Cup Quarterfinal on Wednesday night against Hartford Athletic.

Head Coach Mike Jeffries on the performance:
“I thought Greenville was very organized, came in with great discipline, caused us a lot of trouble on the break and with some of the direct play. We felt like we had a pretty good handle on the game for the most part in terms of possession, but I didn’t feel like in the first half we created enough good chances out of it. We played in front of them too much. Second half, I thought the game opened up and we were a little bit more effective.”
Jeffries on keeping a clean sheet:
“It’s really big for us, I think. We haven’t had one in a while, and I think one of the things going down this stretch, like we’ve talked about, is being able to win 1-0 games. That’s important. I think as games get to the end of the year, games get tighter. It’s more decided by one play, and we were able to make some good plays and spend enough time in front of them, and they just couldn’t finish at all.”
Mathis Guffroy on the win amongst the match delays:
“It was definitely an interesting game. I mean, stopping three minutes before halftime, it was hard to keep the legs going, but we all worked as a team. We knew that we had to go back on the field and work hard, and it worked out.”
Clay Dimick on the victory and the enjoyment of beating a rival:
“I think we went into it knowing that even though they’re further down the table than us, they’re a hard team to play against. They’re going to come here with a chip on their shoulders. So for us to attack it with the same mentality we attack a team in the top four or five in the table was a big mentality test, and we did that…….The rivalry always feels better when you’re on the winning side of it, and it adds a little extra edge to the game.”
