BOISE, ID (September 16, 2026) – Despite going down a man early, the Charlotte Independence battled to earn a hard-fought point in a 1-1 draw at AC Boise on Wednesday night.
The night did not start as Charlotte had envisioned, with Sega Coulibaly sent off for two bookings in the early stages of the match. After Boise took the lead through Denys Kostyshyn in the second half, the Independence quickly responded through Reudd Manin and delivered one of their strongest defensive performances of the season to secure a crucial point in the Players’ Shield race.
Making their first trip to “The Jungle,” the Independence looked to impose their style early, seeking to capitalize in transition against a Boise side that ranks among the top three in USL League One in possession.
However, much like their recent trip to Union Omaha, Charlotte was forced to play a man down following a first-half sending off.
This time, Coulibaly picked up two yellow cards in quick succession against Boise’s Blake Bodily and within 11 minutes, the test at AC Boise Soccer Stadium was made more difficult. With Coulibaly’s removal, Manin dropped back into his familiar center back role.
Former Jack Tumi Moshobane looked to make his old side pay a few minutes after the disqualification. Defender Jake Crull overlapped to the byline, standing up a cross to the forward, but his diving header effort flashed over the bar. Two minutes later, he picked up the ball after a battle in the area and fired just wide of a stretched Matt Levy.
The Independence picked up their first shot on target in the 21st minute. After Bodily looked to push the other way for Boise, the Jacks turned it over and went the other way. Coming off his Player of the Week honors, Joey Skinner cut inside and fired on his right foot, stinging the palms of goalkeeper Jonathan Kliewer.
Following the chance, Bodily was forced to leave the match after hitting the turf. Boise’s captain was replaced by the team’s leading scorer Kostyshyn.
Beginning to turn the screws with the man advantage, Boise struck the woodwork in the 32nd minute. Philip Mayaka found space on the edge of the area, cut onto his left foot, and rattled the crossbar to Charlotte’s relief.
As part of Charlotte’s sturdy defense all night, Javen Romero was outstanding, repeatedly shielding the ball out of play under pressure from onrushing Boise attackers and delivering crucial, well-timed tackles.
The Independence remained composed despite being down to 10 men for the final 40 minutes of the first half, maintaining a compact shape and limiting Boise’s scoring opportunities outside of Mayaka’s strike off the crossbar. Unlike at Omaha, Charlotte made it to the halftime break with the score level and a chance to regroup.
Boise broke through in the 57th minute through the substitute Kostyshyn. Dominic Gasso looped a ball to the back stick where the Ukrainian headed before Levy could come punch away.
Needing an equalizer, Charlotte pushed forward and was immediately rewarded. After Christy Manzinga earned a free kick near the edge of the 18-yard box, Jon Bakero delivered another brilliant ball, finding Manin to touch past Kliewer and level the match just five minutes after Boise’s opener. With another assist, Bakero continues his climb at the top of the single-season assists record with his 13th of the campaign.
Boise came right back after the equalizer and somehow failed to retake the lead. The hosts whipped a dangerous corner into the six-yard box, where Joshua Yaro met a redirected header but could not steer his effort on target from just two yards out. Levy then produced a brilliant reflex save to deny Jonathan Ricketts, allowing the Independence to clear the danger.
Skinner produced the save of the match for Charlotte in the 78th minute. After a costly turnover in midfield, Boise quickly countered with numbers. Nick Moon squared the ball across the face of goal to Kostyshyn, who looked poised to finish, but Skinner made a remarkable last-ditch block from his backside in front of Levy, drawing jubilant reactions from his teammates.
Making his return from a one-match suspension, Souaibou Marou nearly found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The Cameroonian turned brilliantly at the top of the box and unleashed a powerful strike that beat Kliewer but flashed just wide of the post.
Boise appeared to retake the lead in the 85th minute when Thomas Amang slipped behind the Charlotte defense and finished past Levy, but the offside flag went up to rule out the goal.
Charlotte settled into an even deeper low block, bringing another center back in Kevin Riascos on the pitch. The Jacks headed everything away as Boise poured balls in with time ticking down. Finally, Rafael Bonilla blew his final whistle, earning Charlotte a massive road point playing down a man for more than 80 minutes.

“I thought the guys were incredibly gritty, really disciplined. Just incredible work-rate and effort. Concentration was huge tonight. Even at the end of the game, they threw everything at us, and we kept our composure, managed the game well, and maybe even had a little bit of a chance at the end to steal it completely, which I thought was a pretty good credit to the group. Everybody out there put their heart into it.”
Jeffries on the relations to the Omaha match and the importance of getting to the halftime break:
“We took our lessons from Omaha and implemented them quite well. I thought we were much better disciplined, kept a really good shape, and so forth throughout. Getting into halftime was huge. We had our moments in the first half, but for the most part, they had a lot of the game. I didn’t feel like we gave away a ton of chances.”
Jeffries on an immediate response to Boise’s goal:
“In the second half, they obviously pushed the game pretty hard. Huge for us to get a goal back right away after them scoring. Good play by Christy to earn the foul and get the free kick, then a great ball from Jon and the finish from Reudd.”
Javen Romero on the team’s character:
“We have a great group of guys. We’re a top team for a reason. We fight until the end and fight for one another. We were in the same position not too long ago, so learning from that game, we were able to manage our opponent and take the point on the road. Proud of this group and on to the next one.”
Reudd Manin on the fight back:
“We knew they were going to come at us hard, especially with not many games left in the season. Going down a man so early made it even more challenging, but we stayed composed and continued to fight for every ball and every play. Getting the equalizer right after they scored was a reflection of the work and mentality we’ve shown since the start of the game. That fight and togetherness is what has put us where we are right now, and we have to carry that mentality into every game and keep pushing until the very end.”
