CHARLOTTE, NC (September 26, 2026) – The Charlotte Independence and Fort Wayne FC played to a 1-1 draw in a feisty affair at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.
After a fairly-level first half, an Independence red card gave Fort Wayne control of the match and led to a 82nd minute go-ahead goal from Tiago Dias. Not to be denied, Charlotte hit back to steal a point through Stefano Pinho just prior to stoppage time. It is only the second time in league play this season Charlotte has not taken all three points. The Independence remains trailing Union Omaha at the top of the table.
After an early flurry from Fort Wayne, Charlotte began to control play in Fort Wayne’s end. The in-form Joey Skinner looked to draw a penalty in the 12th minute, but after the referee decided against it, Christy Manzinga fired off Fort Wayne goalkeeper Bernd Schippmann’s near post.
Schippmann stood up to the test in the 18th minute. A poor turnover in their own end led to a devasting transition from the Independence. Souaibou Marou laid off to Manzinga, who cut onto his right before laying back off for Marou to sting the goalkeeper’s gloves from eight yards out.
Charlotte controlled the majority of the first half, but Fort Wayne lurked as a counter threat. Desperate defending from the visitors on multiple occasions kept the league’s best first half team off the board, and everything was to play for the second 45 minutes.
Fort Wayne did not find the back of the net three minutes into the frame thanks to Javen Romero. After the Independence turned it over deep in their own half, Taig Healy found Ryan Becher, whose shot was deflected and heading into the net before Romero swooped in to save off the goal line.
Chris Jaime gave the Independence their first strong moment of the second stanza. The midfielder picked up the ball within his own half and proceeded to beat three Fort Wayne players before drawing a corner kick.
The game changed in the 63rd minute. After doing great work on the press, Jaime tackled James Musa and went into the book for the second time, putting the Independence a man down for the third time in the last five matches.
Marou nearly put the Jacks in the lead shortly after losing Jaime. After Mathis Guffroy intercepted in Charlotte’s half, the Frenchman released the forward down the wing. The Cameroonian showed his speed, beating one before sprinting in behind the defense. His toe-poke effort with onrushing Fort Wayne defenders was kicked away by Schippman.
Fort Wayne’s Clarence Awoudor had a pair of sparkling chances as the 80th minute approached. In the 78th minute, Awoudor received on the edge of the area and blasted off the crossbar. Moments later, Awoudor got in behind and was denied by Matt Levy in fantastic fashion.
The go-ahead goal came shortly after. After a pair of Fort Wayne corners, a looping ball to the back post found Becher, who headed back across the area for Dias to rise high and head home in the 82nd minute.
Never out of it, Charlotte again had the heroics to bring it level. Enzo Martinez’s free kick to the back post bounced around, and soon fell to the Pinho to dispatch home for another critical late goal.
The point could prove important as Charlotte continues to hunt down the club’s first Players’ Shield. The Jacks are back in action next Saturday at Sarasota Paradise as the march to the end of the season rolls on.

“I think this time of year, games are like this, where one play can make or break a game, and it’s like a playoff atmosphere. So it’s good practice for us going into the playoffs. It’s a good mindset exercise for us going into the playoffs.”
