Charlotte (NC) — On Tuesday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, announced defender James Kiffe has joined the 2018 roster. Last season, Kiffe played every regular season minute for Sacramento Republic FC (USL) prior to receiving All-League Second Team honors.
UPCOMING EVENT: MEXICAN CHAMPIONS VISIT INDEPENDENCE FOR INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY
“He's a very experienced defender,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He's a guy that has big-game experience, as we head into the stretch run. He's been an All-League defender previously, so it's a good opportunity for us to bring in a guy with experience at this point in the season.”
The Santa Barbara, California native signed his first professional contract for eventual USL Championship side Republic FC in 2014, starting the final four regular-season matches and all three playoff games. Kiffe provided two assists in the 2014 playoffs, including the service for the final goal in the USL Cup Final. Following a stellar 2017 season in which he led the team with 61 key passes and 64 interceptions, Kiffe was named to the All-League Second Team. In total, Kiffe accumulated 96 regular-season games played, 8,136 minutes, 13 assists and one goal in his four seasons with Republic FC. Most recently, the 29-year-old recorded seven starts for Reno 1868 (USL) this season.
Kiffe and the Independence will next be in action this Saturday, September 1st as Nashville SC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Additionally, the Independence are preparing to host Mexican Champions Santos Laguna for an international friendly on Wednesday, September 5th. All Preferred Sideline seating options are sold out, but tickets are still available by calling 704-206-1515 or purchasing online at https://www.charlotteindependence.com.
