Charleston (SC) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team claimed a critical road point in Southern Derby match up with the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night. The match, reschedule due to Hurricane Florence, ended in a one-goal draw as Independence goalkeeper Brandon Miller made a diving penalty kick save in the first-half and Independence forward Jorge Herrera converted a second-half penalty kick to equalize.
In the third and final regular-season meeting between the teams, the Charleston Battery claimed an early lead as Nicholas Rittmeyer volleyed in an Ian Svantesson cross in the 9th minute. Later in the half, the Battery marched on the Independence defense as Patrick Okonkwo was contacted in the box for a called penalty. However, goalkeeper Brandon Miller stood tall to the task, parrying Svantesson shot from the spot in the 39th minute.
In a great combination play, Independence midfielder Alex Martinez looped in a cross to forward Caleb Calvert who nudge a pass to midfielder Conor O'Brien for a shot saved by Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper. The follow-up attempt by forward Derek Gebhard forced a foul from the Battery defense and a resulting penalty converted by forward Jorge Herrera. The 69th minute equalizer was Herrera's team-high 11th goal of the season.
On a quick turnaround, the Independence will carry a three-game unbeaten run as they face playoff-contending New York Red Bulls II this Saturday, September 22nd at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Discounted tickets are available at https://www.charlotteindependence.com by using promo code "LFN" or by calling the front office at 704-206-1515.
