Tampa (FL) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to seven league games on Saturday night in a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Independence forward Derek Gebhard scored his first goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.
In the 26th minute, the Independence snatched the lead when midfielder Kay Voser curled in a Goal of the Year nominated shot. Assisting on the goal was forward Eamon Zayed, who has three goals and one assist in the last three matches. The Independence extended their lead as Cordell Cato set up Derek Gebhard for his fourth assist this season.
However, a second-half rally from the Rowdies made for a tight conclusion to the match. In the 80th minute, forward Leon Taylor cracked the Independence defense for his fourth goal of the season. But goalkeeper Brandon Miller withstood 16 second-half shots and made five saves on the night helping the Independence notch their tenth win of the season.
With other results around the league, the Independence were officially eliminated from USL Playoff contention, but will still be able to contend for the Southern Derby and North Carolina Derby in the final match of the 2018 season versus in-state rivals North Carolina FC at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday, October 13th.
