MIAMI, Fla. (August 23, 2020) – The Charlotte Independence were beaten for only the second time in the USL Championship this season as Miami FC defeated the Jacks 2-1 at Riccardo Silva Stadium on Sunday evening, in what was the first match between the two sides in USL Championship play.
Jake Areman tucked home moments into the match, but that advantage would be neutralized before the interval. Romario Williams converted a penalty to level the score before the break and then a late second-half free-kick by Tomas Granitto put Miami FC ahead and the scoreline was unchanged despite the visitors’ exertions.

Independence head coach Mike Jeffries made one change from his starting XI that began against Memphis 901 FC, bringing in Dane Kelly for Tresor Mbuyu.
The Jacks wasted no time and got on the board early via an eighth minute strike from Areman. Miami responded less than ten minutes later after Jacks defender Hugh Roberts took down Prince Saydee inside the penalty area and the referee gave a penalty to the home side. Romario Williams' attempt from the spot was blocked by Independence goalkeeper Brandon Miller, but the forward pounced on the rebound and sent the match into 16th minute tied at 1-1, a scoreline the teams took into halftime.
In the second half, both teams battled for the winner, but ultimately it was the hosts that grabbed the game-winning goal through a free-kick by Granitto in the 86th minute, leaving Paul Dalglish’s side in fourth place in the Group H table with five points, one point off ATL UTD 2.
The Jacks remain in second place in the Group G standings on nine points, two points clear of North Carolina FC, with nine matches remaining this season.
Next on the Schedule: The Independence returns to Group G play and the Sportsplex at Matthews on Wednesday, August 26 against North Carolina FC. The derby will be the first meeting between the two North Carolina rivals this season (7 p.m. ET; ESPN+). After the derby, the Jacks play Birmingham Legion FC on August 29 at the Sportsplex at Matthews (7 p.m. ET; ESPN+).
