
#8 Breckyn Monteith scores two goals on the night
GREENEVILLE, S.C. (June 6, 2023) – The Charlotte Independence USL W League team defeated the Greenville Liberty 2-0 on Tuesday night at Furman Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C. The Independence women return to the pitch this Saturday, June 10 for a home match at Community School of Davidson Spartan Athletic Complex in Huntersville, N.C. to host Wake FC at 5:00 pm.
Entering the match, the Charlotte Independence women created multiple opportunities in the attacking third, forcing the Greenville Liberty goalkeeper to make early saves. In the 11th minute, a Charlotte throw in allowed for #17 Olivia Simon to find space out wide. She sent in a long cross to the middle of the 18 yard box. #8 Breckyn Monteith connected and found the back of the net after a strong header to the top right side of the net. Charlotte took the early lead by one.
The Greenville Liberty also looked dangerous at moments in the first half, testing Independence goalkeeper #41 Sejal Johnson. In the 18th minute, Julie Macken had a fast break and dribbled up the pitch. She took the shot from distance, but missed just wide.
Following more strikes at goal, the Charlotte Independence put another one on the board after #21 Carolina Peters dropped a corner kick at the back post. First it was #18 Sydney Smith who got a head on it. It was defended on the goal line by the Greenville defender, but bounced loose for Monteith who was there to bury it home for the Independence in the 27th minute. Charlotte advanced their lead to two goals.
Greenville looked for one last press before the half. This time it was Moody who dribbled up the right side of the pitch. She avoided the Independence defenders and found teammate Brathway in the midfield. She took the strike, but missed just over the crossbar.
Halftime: Greenville Liberty 0 – Charlotte Independence 2
Greenville Liberty continued to push on in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Brathway of the Liberty broke through the Independence midfield and got a shot off. Her shot was deflected off the Independence defender. Macken received the second ball and took a left-footed shot that landed just over the net.
Charlotte Independence, on the other end, continued to knock at Liberty’s door. In the 69th minute, they earned a free kick from right outside the 18 yard box. The opportunity was struck at goal, but blocked and cleared away by the Greenville defense.
The Greenville Liberty continued to seek opportunities to score, but Johnson in net for the Independence remained strong and steady and kept her first clean sheet of the season. With the win, the Independence women move to an overall record of 3-2 on the season.
