ALL-TIME SERIES
The Independence took on the Cosmos for the first time on April 3, falling 3-2 at Hinchcliffe Stadium. It was an unconventional match, as the Independence gave away three penalty kicks to the hosts and Ajmeer Spengler scored a hat trick from the spot. Viggo Ortiz scored his second screamer of the young season, while Jefferson Amaya scored a stunning first professional goal in the effort.
All-Time Record: 0-1-0
MORE LATE-GAME HEROICS IN SARASOTA
After trailing late in Sarasota on Saturday, the Independence pulled another rabbit out of their hat to steal all three points. Souaibou Marou added his second goal of the match in the 89th minute to equalize, and Stefano Pinho scored another last-minute game winner in stoppage time. The Independence have now gained 19 points from losing positions this season, tied for the third-most in a League One campaign all-time.
JEFFRIES SET TO MANAGE 150TH MATCH
The Independence gaffer is set to manage his 150th USL League One match on Saturday night. Now in his 12th season with the club, Jeffries is nearing league history, having picked up his 63rd league victory at Sarasota. He now sits one behind Darren Sawatzky for the all-time league record.
SCOUTING THE COSMOS
The New York Cosmos have endured a difficult return to professional soccer in their inaugural USL League One season, having been eliminated from the playoff race. Results have been particularly difficult away from Hinchliffe Stadium, where New York is just 2-11-2. The Cosmos have shown more attacking life of late, however, scoring in each of their last five matches and picking up wins over Fort Wayne FC (4-2) and Richmond Kickers (3-2).
Spengler has been a thorn in Charlotte’s side over the past two seasons. The former Texoma midfielder has scored seven goals in seven all-time matches against the Jacks.
