Charlotte, N.C. — On Friday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team announced the signing of defender Henry Kalungi, and forward Éamon Zayed. Zayed’s signing is pending P-1 visa approval. Kalungi enters his fourth season with the Independence, previously appearing in 68 games with 5,538 minutes. Zayed comes to the Independence from Indy Eleven (USL) where he scored 26 goals over 59 games in two seasons.
Kalungi, 30, has not only established himself as a presence on the pitch, but also in his community. The Rock Hill, South Carolina resident coaches a youth team from Discoveries SC and has made multiple charity efforts through the Henry Kalungi Foundation in his hometown of Kampala, Uganda. Kalungi returns to the Independence as a key figure in the makeup of the roster.
“Henry is so much a part of the history of our group and the successes we've had, so it's good to have him back,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He clearly knows what is expected and has been a stalwart defender in the league for a number of years. It's a real positive addition bringing him back.”
This past Saturday, Independence defenders Donnie Smith and Bilal Duckett made up the center back pairing in the 4-1 Season Opening win vs Ottawa Fury FC. Defender Jungsoo Lee was out with an injury. Kalungi, who started 27 games for the Independence a season ago, will certainly factor into the defensive group in 2018.
“We don't have depth at the current moment, so having another guy that can play almost anywhere along the back line, it's a plus and necessary,” said Jeffries. “It's a long season and it does require the whole group to contribute and step up.”
In addition to depth along the backline, the Independence bolstered their scoring threat with 34-year-old, 6’2” forward Éamon Zayed. The Dublin, Ireland native provides an additional attacking presence in an already potent offense.
“Zayed gives us the opportunity to have different options up front,” said Jeffries. “Some of the strikers on the team have different qualities, so it does give us the ability to have some different looks and tweak the system a little bit more than what we've had in previous years. Clearly, it adds to the opportunities to play directly with two strikers, or at times have another guy coming off the bench who is a real threat to score goals.”
Akin to the 11 Independence teammates with international backgrounds, Zayed is a Libyan national with eight call-ups since 2011. A prolific striker with clubs such as Drogheda United Football Club (Ireland), Derry City Football Club (Ireland), Persepolis Football Club (Iran), and Sabah Football Association (Malaysia), Zayed now brings his scoring pedigree to the Independence.
“Similar to [signing] Henry, it's important we have depth throughout the squad,” said Jeffries. “[Zayed] has an excellent goal-scoring record. He's a guy that is clever in and around the box.”

Charlotte, N.C. — Queen City Soccer Club announced today that SoccerPulse has signed on as a Proud Partner of the Charlotte Independence. Elements include branding and social media. In addition, the Team will be using the SoccerPulse app for the 2018 season.
SoccerPulse was created by Matt Danaher in 2017. After a career that included playing in the USSF Development Academy, NCAA Division I, Premier Development League, and abroad for Salthill Devon in Ireland and FCA Darmstadt in Germany, Matt wanted to create an app that would make it easy for coaches to monitor their players’ readiness and training loads.
As the Director of Player Development for a youth club in Connecticut, he spent long hours manually inputting data into a spreadsheet that recorded how players were feeling, how many minutes they had trained, and any injuries that they had sustained. He knew there must be an easier way to track this information and make it available to coaches when planning their weekly training sessions.
From that idea, SoccerPulse was born. The app makes it easy for coaches to plan their periodization based on the feedback from the players, and see how intense a training session or a game was. Coaches can also give the players feedback on their training performance, making it easy to know which players are in the best form.
The Charlotte Independence will be using SoccerPulse during the 2018 USL season, with Matt serving as a Sports Scientist intern under Independence Strength & Conditioning Coach Dan Barlow.
“I’m delighted to be able to work with Mike, Troy, Joel, Dan, Tara, and the entire Independence team this season”, said Matt Danaher, SoccerPulse founder. “Using SoccerPulse with a high-level club like Charlotte helps me to make improvements to the app based on feedback from the coaches and players. It’s my hope that SoccerPulse will assist in keeping our players injury free and lead to a successful season in 2018.”
“The app is excellent and provides valuable information to the coaching staff”, said Mike Jeffries, Head Coach of the Independence. “ We are excited about the partnership and have started using it with the players.”
SoccerPulse is available on iOS and Android devices. For more information, please visit https://www.soccerpulse.net

Charlotte, N.C. — On Friday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team announced the signing of midfielder Cordell Cato, pending league and federation approval. The 25-year-old becomes the second Trinidad and Tobago International player signed to the 2018 roster joining teammate Kevan George. Over the past five season, Cato has played for Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Jose Earthquakes.
“To get a player with so much experience in the MLS is fantastic,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “We're trying to bring in a mix of guys, and he's somebody that's in the prime of his career and offers us a high-level of play and is a guy that has the ability to take on players one-v-one. I think it's a fantastic signing for us and a guy we're really excited to have here.”
Cato began his professional career in 2009, signing with top division, Trinidad and Tobago side San Juan Jabloteh. As a 19-year-old, Cato made his MLS debut with the Seattle Sounders during the 2012 season. The following season, his rights were acquired via trade by the San Jose Earthquakes where he would log 6,950 minutes in 111 games, scoring seven goals with 10 assists in five seasons.
“I feel like my experience helps me related to the older guys, as well as the younger guys,” said Cato. “I'm still learning, but at the same time, I can pass on information and knowledge I've gained in the MLS over the last six years.”
Since 2014, Cato has made 20 appearances for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup CONCACAF qualification, Cato made starts in “The Hex” versus Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Mexico. The Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago native has two goals for the Soca Warriors including a 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup score versus Guatemala in front of a crowd of 54,126 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
Cato joins a lengthy list of Independence signings with international backgrounds such as South Korean Jungsoo Lee, Swiss native Kay Voser, Cameroonian Calvin Doum, and Liberian international Joel Johnson.
“I think it's fantastic for us this off-season to bring in different cultures and look to integrate them into how we play,” said Jeffries. “I think it speaks a lot about the city, community, and the direction we want to go in as an organization. Those types of players are finding Charlotte a desirable place to be and to play.”
For Cato, his arrival in Charlotte marks his first visit to the city noting novelty as an importance in his decision to sign with a club. He credits Trinidad and Tobago teammate Kevan George for persuading his choice, as well.
“Joining Charlotte had a lot to do with Kevan and him being here,” said Cato. “We were always talking and I was back home with my family and we were talking about the possibilities of where I'm going to go next. We just started talking and [Kevan] talked to Mike, Mike [Jeffries] reached out to me, and it was pretty simple from there.”
Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League professional soccer team, will kick off the 2018 season at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday, March 17th when the Independence hosts Ottawa Fury FC. Charlotte, N.C. — On Thursday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, received forward Caleb Calvert, midfielder Ricardo Perez, defender Sam Vines, and goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) affiliate Colorado Rapids. Per the terms of the affiliation agreement, the Colorado Rapids reserve the right to recall loaned players.
Calvert returns to the Independence for his fourth loan stint in as many years with the club. The 21-year-old has amassed nine goals in 47 appearances in his time with the Independence. Calvert is a native of Wrightwood, California and signed to Chivas USA as a homegrown player in 2013.
Perez, 22, joins the Independence as a Rapids homegrown player. During the 2017 season, Perez scored in his professional debut on loan to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks (USL). In his four-year, collegiate career at Creighton University, Perez scored 15 goals with nine assists in 88 games. He earned 2016 Big East Midfielder of the Year and was select to the Big East First-Team as a senior.
Vines spent time with the Independence as a Rapids Academy player last season. The Rapids signed the 18-year-old to a homegrown contract this past February. In 2017, Vines was named Colorado Rapids Academy Player of the Year. Since 2013, the Colorado Springs, Colorado native has made 63 appearances for Rapids Development Academy teams and has 23 call-ups to the US Youth National Team.
Dykstra, 32, comes to the Independence with extensive MLS and USL experience. As a rookie, he signed with the Chicago Fire (MLS), where he spent two seasons. In 2011, Dykstra posted a 0.846 goals against average as a member of the Charleston Battery (USL). The subsequent year, he signed with DC United (MLS) where he spent five seasons, including loan stints to Charleston Battery and Richmond Kickers (USL). Ahead of the 2017 season, Dykstra was selected by Sporting Kansas City (MLS) in the MLS Re-Entry Draft. The Rapids acquired Dykstra this past February via trade.
Last December, the Independence and Rapids renewed their affiliation for a fourth season. The two organizations have exchanged numerous player, including recent Rapids signing and former Independence USL MVP Finalist, Enzo Martinez.
“The relationship has given us some guys who have contributed to the roster,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “It's certainly got us players like Caleb [Calvert], Marlon [Hairston], [Dominique] Badji, who have come in and done well with us and fit in back in Colorado with success. It's been huge for us and I expect that will continue.”
Not unlike the message conveyed to all players who wear an Independence uniform, Head Coach Mike Jeffries makes it clear that development and playing time is a product of an individual’s daily grind.
“It's important for young players to come into an environment where they have to compete and have to earn a spot,” said Jeffries. “Nothing is handed to them in any way, shape, or form. I think we pride ourselves in being that type of environment where it doesn't matter where you're coming from. It's about what you do and how you perform day-in and day-out. That's what makes the decision if you play or not. I think our relationship with Colorado is such that they agree and buy into that. It's a good situation and long-term, developmentally, it is important for those guys to earn their time on the field and to have to fight and compete, every day.”

“It’s certainly got us players like Caleb [Calvert], Marlon [Hairston], [Dominique] Badji, who have come in and done well with us and fit in back in Colorado with success. It’s been huge for us and I expect that will continue.”
Not unlike the message conveyed to all players who wear an Independence uniform, Head Coach Mike Jeffries makes it clear that development and playing time is a product of an individual’s daily grind.
“It’s important for young players to come into an environment where they have to compete and have to earn a spot,” said Jeffries. “Nothing is handed to them in any way, shape, or form. I think we pride ourselves in being that type of environment where it doesn’t matter where you’re coming from. It’s about what you do and how you perform day-in and day-out. That’s what makes the decision if you play or not. I think our relationship with Colorado is such that they agree and buy into that. It’s a good situation and long-term, developmentally, it is important for those guys to earn their time on the field and to have to fight and compete, every day.”
Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League professional soccer team, will kick off the 2018 season at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday, March 17th when the Independence hosts Ottawa Fury FC. Charlotte, N.C. — The Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, announced on Tuesday the signing of midfielder Kay Voser, pending league and federation approval, as well as a receipt of his International Transfer Clearance. With the addition of Voser, the Independence roster sits at 15 players under contract for the 2018 season.
“We’re really excited to have him,” said Charlotte Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He’s a very good technical player and passer. He has a dynamic change-of-pace, but probably most importantly for us, he’s a savvy tactical player.”
Voser comes to the Independence formerly playing for high-profile European clubs FC Basel, Fulham FC, and most recently FC Zürich. The most eye-catching feature of Voser’s resume is his experience with Basel in the 2013 UEFA Champions League. Teammates with current Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah, Voser and Basel defeated Premier League side Chelsea twice in group play.
“We had a successful year winning the league, and twice against Chelsea,” said Voser. “It was a fantastic feeling. Playing at Stamford Bridge and winning against one of the best teams in the world, there’s not much better than that.”
The Baden, Switzerland native says he’s never visited North Carolina, but was attracted by the prospects of living in Charlotte for the upcoming season.
“I’ve never been to Charlotte, but I asked a couple people who lived in America and they all talked well of the city,” said Voser. “That was a reason to come to the United States and Charlotte because the city is nice and I think I will enjoy my time there.”
Voser brings another diverse career experience joining Independence players who have played abroad such as Yann Ekra in France, Jungsoo Lee in South Korea and Calvin Doum in Cameroon.
“I don’t know a lot about American football, but I’m sure tactically and technically I can bring my perspective to the team,” said Voser. “I hope I can push with the team to the playoffs and try to win the title.”
Self-described as a quick, tactical, technical player, Voser brings a bit of flexibility to the Independence. Coach Jeffries says Voser is experienced at both wingback positions, both outside midfield positions, and at central midfield where he forecasts as his best fit for the Independence.
“He’s a guy who can see things and make good decisions on the ball,” added Jeffries. “With his experience and background, we expect him to lift the level of the group.”
