BIRMINGHAM (Sept. 12, 2020) – The Charlotte Independence utilized goals from Dane Kelly and Derek Gebhard to earn a 3-1 victory against Birmingham Legion FC at BBVA Compass Field. The Independence improved its 2020 USL Championship record to 6-3-3 and extended its unbeaten streak to three games.

Kelly began the scoring for the Independence in the first half and Gebhard’s goal late in the second frame propelled the Independence to three points. The three goals marked the sixth time the Jacks have scored more than one goal in a match this season.

With the win, the Independence (6-3-3; 21 points), remain in second place in the Group G standings but move within one point of Legion FC (6-3-4; 22 points), followed by North Carolina FC (3-6-1; 10 points) and Memphis 901 FC (2-5-4; 10 points).

The match became a battle of wills and it was the Independence that got the crucial first goal just 17 minutes into the match. A cross into the box by Jake Areman bounced perfectly to Dane Kelly, who crisply powered in from close range to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead. The goal lit a fire under the Legion FC attack and the Independence lead would stand for just 17 minutes before Neco Brett’s first-time effort sneaked past Brandon Miller in the 34th minute.

Just before halftime, Areman again found Kelly with a cross into the box. The forward met Areman’s cross and headed a brilliant effort beyond the reach of Legion FC ‘keeper Matt Vanoekel and inside the upper left corner to send the Jacks into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

The goal was Kelly’s tenth of the 2020 season, moving him ahead of Indy Eleven’s Tyler Pasher for second in the Championship. His 87th career USL goal also furthered his advantage on top of the USL’s all-time list.

The Independence carried the lead into the second half where cards began to take their toll on both teams. In the 60th minute, Legion FC had a player sent off as Anderson Asiedu received a second caution. Both teams kept up the high tempo despite Legion FC being reduced to 10-men.

The Independence continued to push throughout the period and would finally get the necessary third goal in the 86th minute when Gebhard finished a Guido Vadala through ball with his right foot for his second goal of the year.

In the 89th minute, the Jacks were also reduced to 10-men as Joel Johnson received his second yellow card of the match. Johnson will now miss the Jacks’ next match against North Carolina FC. #BHMvCLT was the fourth and final meeting between the two Group G teams, with Legion FC being the only Group G team that had not lost to the Independence before tonight.

Next on the Schedule: The Independence heads to Cary, N.C. to tackle Group G rival North Carolina FC. The game will be broadcast beginning at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

“We managed to adjust very well in our first home game with them and were able to find ways of breaking them down but we know we need to be better tomorrow night.”

The Independence currently sit in second place in the Group G standings after earning six points last week in wins over Memphis 901 FC and North Carolina FC. Eight different Jacks have tallied a goal or an assist while goalkeeper Brandon Miller ranks first in the USL in saves (48) and forward Dane Kelly ranks third in goals (8).

For their performances, Kelly and Miller were both named to the USL Championship’s Week 11 Team of the Week. The Championship’s all-time leading scorer, Kelly also earned Player of the Week honors after his hat trick led the Independence to a 3-1 victory against North Carolina FC on Saturday night. The Jamaican international has now recorded four regular season hat tricks in his career, also a league record.

In their last match, Legion FC earned one point in a 1-1 draw against Memphis 901 FC on Wednesday evening thanks to Bruno Lapa converting from the spot in the second half. Tommy Soehn’s side currently sit in first place in the Group G standings, four points ahead of the Jacks.

“We must deal with their pace and athleticism up front that has caused us so much trouble in the previous three games,” continued Jeffries. "We know we need to be better managing that and managing them on the counter.”

“We do feel like we can possess and move the ball against them but we have to find ways that we can be cleaner in the final third and create more chances.”

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2020) – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 11 of the 2020 regular season on Tuesday, with the Charlotte Independence’s Dane Kelly and Brandon Miller both being named to the USL's weekly list. 

Previously, Miller was voted to the Week 1 Team of the Week after recording a league-high 10 saves in a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City II and surpassed 300 USL Championship career saves, which has only been achieved five previous times. Kelly made his first USL Championship Team of the Week appearance this season in Week 8 after scoring in consecutive games against Birmingham Legion FC and Memphis 901 FC. The forward's goal against Legion FC was the 80th of his USL career and helped the Independence move into second place in the Group G standings.

The Championship’s all-time leading scorer, Kelly also earned Player of the Week honors after his hat trick led the Independence to a 3-1 victory against North Carolina FC on Saturday night. The Jamaican international has now recorded four regular season hat tricks in his career, also a league record.

Kelly and Miller helped the Independence open an eight-point gap between themselves in second place in Group G and third-placed NCFC as the final stretch of the regular season arrives.

Kelly earned 87 percent of the ballot for his performance. Both FC Tulsa’s Dario Suarez – who scored three goals in two games for his side as it picked up four points on the week – and El Paso Locomotive FC’s Dylan Mares – who notched the game-winning goal and an assist in El Paso’s 3-2 win against New Mexico United on Saturday – finished tied for second on seven percent.

The Championship’s Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.

CHARLOTTE (Sept. 6, 2020) – In the eighth meeting of Charlotte Independence-North Carolina FC in USL Championship play, the Independence claimed its fifth win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over North Carolina FC as forward Dane Kelly recorded a hat trick at the Sportsplex at Matthews.

The Independence surged into a two-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes at the Sportsplex at Matthews, courtesy of two clinical finishes by Kelly.

In the second half, Kelly completed his hat trick in the 79th minute and sealed a second all-time victory over North Carolina FC for the Jacks.

CHARLOTTE (Sept. 6, 2020) – In the eighth meeting of Charlotte Independence-North Carolina FC in USL Championship play, the Independence claimed its fifth win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over North Carolina FC as forward Dane Kelly recorded a hat trick at the Sportsplex at Matthews.

The Independence surged into a two-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes at the Sportsplex at Matthews, courtesy of two clinical finishes by Kelly.

In the second half, Kelly completed his hat trick in the 79th minute and sealed a second all-time victory over North Carolina FC for the Jacks.
