
Matthews (NC) — In the 2018 Season Opener, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League professional soccer team, routed Ottawa Fury FC 4-1 at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday night. Trinidad and Tobago internal midfielder, Cordell Cato tapped in a Donnie Smith corner kick to give the Jacks a halftime lead. Cato added a second goal after halftime, bagging a brace in his USL debut. Independence forward and USL 2nd All-Time goal scorer, Jorge Herrera converted a 79th minute penalty kick to give the Independence a commanding 3-1 lead. Herrera played a key role in Charlotte's final goal, as Ottawa defender Kyle Porter deflected a shot into his own goal. Saturday night's win marked the first Season Opening victory in the four-year franchise history for the Independence.
"It’s a great feeling and a big step for this franchise," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "Now we have to continue this success throughout the season.”
