Matthews (NC) — In the 2018 Season Opener, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League professional soccer team, routed Ottawa Fury FC 4-1 at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday night. Trinidad and Tobago internal midfielder, Cordell Cato tapped in a Donnie Smith corner kick to give the Jacks a halftime lead.  Cato added a second goal after halftime, bagging a brace in his USL debut. Independence forward and USL 2nd All-Time goal scorer, Jorge Herrera converted a  79th minute penalty kick to give the Independence a commanding 3-1 lead. Herrera played a key role in Charlotte's final goal, as Ottawa defender Kyle Porter deflected a shot into his own goal. Saturday night's win marked the first Season Opening victory in the four-year franchise history for the Independence. 

"It’s a great feeling and a big step for this franchise," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "Now we have to continue this success throughout the season.”

Charlotte, N.C. — On Friday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team announced the signing of midfielder Cordell Cato, pending league and federation approval. The 25-year-old becomes the second Trinidad and Tobago International player signed to the 2018 roster joining teammate Kevan George. Over the past five season, Cato has played for Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Jose Earthquakes.

“To get a player with so much experience in the MLS is fantastic,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “We're trying to bring in a mix of guys, and he's somebody that's in the prime of his career and offers us a high-level of play and is a guy that has the ability to take on players one-v-one. I think it's a fantastic signing for us and a guy we're really excited to have here.”

Cato began his professional career in 2009, signing with top division, Trinidad and Tobago side San Juan Jabloteh. As a 19-year-old, Cato made his MLS debut with the Seattle Sounders during the 2012 season. The following season, his rights were acquired via trade by the San Jose Earthquakes where he would log 6,950 minutes in 111 games, scoring seven goals with 10 assists in five seasons.  

“I feel like my experience helps me related to the older guys, as well as the younger guys,” said Cato. “I'm still learning, but at the same time, I can pass on information and knowledge I've gained in the MLS over the last six years.”

Since 2014, Cato has made 20 appearances for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup CONCACAF qualification, Cato made starts in “The Hex” versus Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Mexico. “Joining Charlotte had a lot to do with Kevan and him being here,” said Cato. “We were always talking and I was back home with my family and we were talking about the possibilities of where I'm going to go next. Charlotte, N.C. — On Thursday, the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, received forward Caleb Calvert, midfielder Ricardo Perez, defender Sam Vines, and goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) affiliate Colorado Rapids. Per the terms of the affiliation agreement, the Colorado Rapids reserve the right to recall loaned players.

Calvert returns to the Independence for his fourth loan stint in as many years with the club. The 21-year-old has amassed nine goals in 47 appearances in his time with the Independence. Calvert is a native of Wrightwood, California and signed to Chivas USA as a homegrown player in 2013.  

RECENT NEWS: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE VET JOINS INDEPENDENCE

 

Perez, 22, joins the Independence as a Rapids homegrown player. During the 2017 season, Perez scored in his professional debut on loan to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks (USL). In his four-year, collegiate career at Creighton University, Perez scored 15 goals with nine assists in 88 games. He earned 2016 Big East Midfielder of the Year and was select to the Big East First-Team as a senior.

Vines spent time with the Independence as a Rapids Academy player last season. The Rapids signed the 18-year-old to a homegrown contract this past February. In 2017, Vines was named Colorado Rapids Academy Player of the Year. Since 2013, the Colorado Springs, Colorado native has made 63 appearances for Rapids Development Academy teams and has 23 call-ups to the US Youth National Team.

Dykstra, 32, comes to the Independence with extensive MLS and USL experience. As a rookie, he signed with the Chicago Fire (MLS), where he spent two seasons. In 2011, Dykstra posted a 0.846 goals against average as a member of the Charleston Battery (USL). The subsequent year, he signed with DC United (MLS) where he spent five seasons, including loan stints to Charleston Battery and Richmond Kickers (USL). Ahead of the 2017 season, Dykstra was selected by Sporting Kansas City (MLS) in the MLS Re-Entry Draft. The Rapids acquired Dykstra this past February via trade.

Last December, the Independence and Rapids renewed their affiliation for a fourth season. The two organizations have exchanged numerous player, including recent Rapids signing and former Independence USL MVP Finalist, Enzo Martinez.   

“The relationship has given us some guys who have contributed to the roster,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “It's certainly got us players like Caleb [Calvert], Marlon [Hairston], [Dominique] Badji, who have come in and done well with us and fit in back in Colorado with success. It's been huge for us and I expect that will continue.”

Not unlike the message conveyed to all players who wear an Independence uniform, Head Coach Mike Jeffries makes it clear that development and playing time is a product of an individual’s daily grind.

“It's important for young players to come into an environment where they have to compete and have to earn a spot,” said Jeffries. “Nothing is handed to them in any way, shape, or form. I think we pride ourselves in being that type of environment where it doesn't matter where you're coming from. It's about what you do and how you perform day-in and day-out. That's what makes the decision if you play or not. I think our relationship with Colorado is such that they agree and buy into that. It's a good situation and long-term, developmentally, it is important for those guys to earn their time on the field and to have to fight and compete, every day.”

Voser comes to the Independence formerly playing for high-profile European clubs FC Basel, Fulham FC, and most recently FC Zürich. The most eye-catching feature of Voser’s resume is his experience with Basel in the 2013 UEFA Champions League. Teammates with current Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah, Voser and Basel defeated Premier League side Chelsea twice in group play.

“I’ve never been to Charlotte, but I asked a couple people who lived in America and they all talked well of the city,” said Voser. “That was a reason to come to the United States and Charlotte because the city is nice and I think I will enjoy my time there.”

Voser brings another diverse career experience joining Independence players who have played abroad such as Yann Ekra in France, Jungsoo Lee in South Korea and Calvin Doum in Cameroon.

“I don’t know a lot about American football, but I’m sure tactically and technically I can bring my perspective to the team,” said Voser. “I hope I can push with the team to the playoffs and try to win the title.”

Self-described as a quick, tactical, technical player, Voser brings a bit of flexibility to the Independence. Coach Jeffries says Voser is experienced at both wingback positions, both outside midfield positions, and at central midfield where he forecasts as his best fit for the Independence.

“He’s a guy who can see things and make good decisions on the ball,” added Jeffries. “With his experience and background, we expect him to lift the level of the group.”

Self-described as a quick, tactical, technical player, Voser brings a bit of flexibility to the Independence. Coach Jeffries says Voser is experienced at both wingback positions, both outside midfield positions, and at central midfield where he forecasts as his best fit for the Independence.

“He’s a guy who can see things and make good decisions on the ball,” added Jeffries. “With his experience and background, we expect him to lift the level of the group.”

Charlotte, N.C. — The Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, announced signing two rookie midfielders, Jake Areman and Mutaya Mwape, pending league and federation approvals.

Areman comes to the Independence having last played for Monmouth University. In two seasons with the Hawks, the Freehold, New Jersey native scored four goals and nine assists in 36 starts. In the summer of 2017, Areman played for Premier Development League (PDL) side New York Red Bulls U23.

“He's gotten up to the speed of things very quickly,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He's very a quick player and has some one-on-one capabilities. He can play in a couple different spots; wide midfield on either side or in the back, so he gives us a little flexibility in that regard.”

Areman, like past Independence rookie signings such as Callum Ross, Jaime Siaj, and Lewis Hilton, attended the Independence-Rapids Combine in December. Coach Jeffries says the speedy midfielder was a standout during the two-day workout.

“It was very different because it was only my second [tryout] after college,” said Areman of his combine experience. “You come in with a lot of nerves and there's 50 or 60 people here so try to find a way to stand out. Thankfully I showed pretty well during [the combine], and they gave me another chance to come in over this past couple weeks and I've really enjoyed it.”

Both Areman and Mwape have been on trail with the Independence since the beginning of preseason. Areman scored in the Independence’s first preseason game versus Columbus Crew SC on February 17th. Mwape started both preseason games, thus far.

Last season with the PDL Champion Charlotte Eagles, Mwape appeared in 12 games recording 879 minutes played and two goals. In two seasons at Lindsey Wilson College, the Zambia native scored 25 goals with 19 assists on his way to a  2017 NAIA First Team All-American selection as a sophomore.

“Mutaya is an excellent technical player,” said Jeffries. “He has a dynamic ability to run at defenders and create on his own. He's been pretty exciting in what we've seen over the past couple of weeks. He's got some different ideas in the final third and it's been a good start for him.”

Mwape says he became familiar with the Independence’s attacking style of play after the PDL Championship game last July. Heading into his rookie season, he’s excited about the new challenges of going pro into and is appreciative of the veteran presence helping him along.

“I’m listening to the guys who have been here because they have experience with the club for some time,” said Mwape. “Learning from them and trying to be a player that I'm not and help out the team the best I can.”

Jordan was drafted by the Philadelphia Union (Major League Soccer) in 2012. In the two subsequent season, the Naperville, Illinois native went on loan to USL side Harrisburg City Islanders. The following seasons, Jordan bolstered Minnesota United’s (NASL) midfield en route to two consecutive playoff appearances.
