With current league leaders Union Omaha kicking off 30 minutes later against Fort Wayne, the winner between Charlotte and One Knoxville could climb into first place. If Omaha drops points with a draw or loss, either the Independence or Knoxville would take over the top spot with a victory.
Charlotte Looks to Right All-Time Record vs. Knoxville
One Knox has had the best of Charlotte in the all-time series between the two clubs. Charlotte has only taken three points one time from the Tennessee side in ten meetings – a 3-1 victory on May 16 last season at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Knoxville took the lone matchup thus far this campaign, scoring a late winner for a 2-1 win back in April.
Stefano Pinho In Line for First Charlotte Appearance
Saturday could mark the Charlotte debut of newly signed forward Stefano Pinho. The 35-year-old brings an accomplished résumé to the Independence, having starred across multiple leagues and countries. A two-time NASL MVP and Golden Boot winner, Pinho also spent time in Major League Soccer with Orlando City SC and arrives with a well-established reputation as a clinical finisher. Pinho appeared for Union Omaha last season.
Offense vs. Defense
Saturday’s matchup features a clash of styles. Charlotte has been the most prolific attack in USL League One, leading the league with 39 goals scored. One Knoxville, meanwhile, has built its success on a stingy defense, conceding a league-low 17 goals. Something has to give Saturday night as one of the league’s best attacks meets its toughest defensive test.
Young Romero Leads the Charlotte Defense
Javen Romero has emerged as one of Charlotte’s most important players this season. The 20-year-old center back has played all but eight minutes in league play and leads the Independence in key defensive categories, including tackles won, duels won, and aerial duels won. Beyond his defensive contributions, Romero has been instrumental in building attacks from the back with his composure and passing ability. He’s also made an impact in the final third, scoring the first two goals of his professional career and assisting Souaibou Marou’s seventh goal of the season in last weekend’s win over Richmond.
